Huskies Chow Down upon Cougs’ in Hunger Bowl…

December 31st, 2013 · No Comments

So another year has blasted by your humble Sportyblog Senior Scribe “Touchdown Tommy” who’s still trying to recover from his recent overload of ‘lil Pigskin games whilst awaiting to see if the Seattle Seahawks can finally secure the NFC West Division crown…

As I listened via Zed ‘Nternetz - since I found ESPN’s announcers sounding like CRAP! And my ‘lil transistor radio couldn’t pick up the AM radio signal cleanly, fortunately I could listen via ‘Confuzer to my second University of Washington Huskies football game of the season.

Thus, somewhat eagerly awaiting the ‘DAWGS appearance in the Fight Hunger Bowl in the stadium that beleaguered MLB Home Runs leader Barry bonds once played in, as it was somewhat funny listening to the multiple baseball references made during the game, while it seems a tad bit bizarre that both teams were confined to one sideline!

I was mostly intrigued over the game’s outcome since the ‘DAWGS had failed to be victorious in their past two Bowl Game outings, actually having been shut out of the wins Colum since the 2001 Rose Bowl game; Aye Karumba! As it seems somewhat strange conjuring up the thought that 5th-year senior QB Keith Price went Manu e Manu with some ex-Baylor Heisman trophy winning Quarterback known simply as RG3 just two-years ago…

Airing it Out at the Alamo…

Yet of even more intrigue was the fact that Huskies QB coach Marques Tuiasosopo had been elevated to Head Coach status for the game after Coach Sarc’s sudden defection to USC, while obviously I also hoped that Price would finish off his Huskies career as a winner.

And while UW record beater Bishop Sankey was his typical self, scoring two touchdowns before sitting out the end of the fourth quarter with a hand injury, Sankey, and for that part the entire Huskies offense was outdone by the simply electrifying 100+ yard kickoff return runback by John Ross! As I don’t know how to type it, but the “little boy giggle” glee in Damon Huard’s voice, somewhat reminiscent of the Pillsbury Doughboy was most humourous before KJR 950AM’s lead announcer Bob Rondo said emphatically “SEE YUH!” As Ross took it to the house to give UW a then 14-7 lead over BYU.

And while I think that the ‘DAWGS entire Defense should have been named MVP of the game, I suppose this honour needs to be awarded to a single individual, as UW Defensive End Hau’oli Kikaha was bestowed the honour for Defensive players while Bishop Sankey was awarded the Offensive player MVP honours.

Yet it truly was the Huskies smothering defense that first kept BYU’s offense from scoring points in the first half, after allowing a single touchdown to tie the game 7-7, the ‘DAWGS started nibbling on the Cougars Stallion QB Tayson Hill, by sacking him and denying the Kittycatz’ entry into the end zone, limiting them to just three field goals instead while Sankey scored his second 11yd TD to see the first half end 21-16 in the Huskies favour.

And whilst UW Quarterback Keith Price wasn’t overly stellar overall, as his first half fumble made me flashback to another perennial cough-up specialist named Dave Krieg… Nevertheless Price did manage to successfully hook-up with his large Tight End ‘ASJ (Austin Seferian-Jenkins) on the Huskies first drive of the third quarter to increase their lead to 28-16.

Yet it was the Defense rising to the occasion after Price got knocked silly and threw an interception, as the ‘DAWGS first held BYU to a field goal attempt which wasn’t handled cleanly, as Rondo described how the place holder had had to reach behind to corral the snap before the kick was wide left!

then Huskies back-up QB Cyler Miles came into the game, as Price was being X-Rayed for a possible cracked rib, as he’d stand upon the sidelines for the remainder of the game along with Bishop Sankey who’d had his hand injured, as Miles romped for a ‘Mega run to put the ‘DAWGS into field goal range, as the Huskies kicker calmly booted another long-range kick for the game’s final score, 31-16 as impressively the UW Defense kept the BYU Cougs’ offense scoreless the entire second half in what surely will be Defensive Coordinator Justin Wilcox’s final game in Purple ‘N Gold.

Immediately afterwards, Austin Seferian-Jenkins declared his intentions to forgo his Senior year and bolt for the lofty monetary confines of the NFL, while Husky Junior RB Bishop Sankey was still undecided upon his return, as I’ll be somewhat surprised if Keith Price gets drafted next year? Although Price leads the U of W Huskies school records for most (QB) touchdowns with 75, he seemed fumble-prone in the two games I watched him play, along with being jittery and throwing some really bad passes for interceptions, so who knows?

Meanwhile Coach Tui’, the ‘DAWGS interim coach whose record is now 1-0 will hopefully accept the offer by Huskies new Head Coach Chris Peterson to become his Tight Ends coach where Marques Tuiasosopo’s winning attitude will become infectious!

And on a side note, the Fight Hunger Bowl’s officiating crew made history as it was the first time ever that two female Referee’s participated in a Bowl game with Sarah Thomas and Maia Chaka making the calls in what’s definitely a positive sign for the NCAA and hopefully will transfer over to the vaunted National Football League…
