Turn Out the Lights - Don

In case you haven’t heard, Don Meredith has passed away at the age of 72, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The All Pro Dallas Cowboys Quarter Back (1960-68) who led them to three straight Division titles and two Championship games, both times losing to Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers, abruptly retired from football prior to the start of the 1969 season at age 31. As Dandy Don was apparently heartbroken over his performance after throwing three interceptions against the Cleveland Browns in a Playoff loss…

Meredith then quickly made the transition to becoming a Color Analyst on ABC’s wildly popular Monday Night football in 1971 as part of the original broadcast booth trio of Keith Jackson, Howard Cosell and Meredith. It was during his MNF career that I first became aware of “Dandy Don’s” signature trademark song; Turn Out the Lights, The Party’s Over… An ‘Ol Willie Nelson tune that Dandy Don sung when the Monday Night Football’s game was seemingly out of reach for one of the games opponents…
